General Information - Obtaining a Permit to Operate
If you need a Permit to Operate, check the list of Permit Application Forms for your equipment type. All forms lists, except where noted, should include the General Authority to Construct Application Form (G100) , the Health Risk Assessment Information (HRA 100) and the General Information Document (G101) . All submitted applications must include the required forms and must conform to the requirements in G101.
If you do not find a list of application forms matching your equipment, you may download G100, HRA 100 and G101 separately. After you have submitted G100 and HRA 100, the AQMD will notify you if additional information is required for your equipment type.
You may also contact the AQMD at 916 874-4800 for permit
application forms. For compliance assistance, you
may contact the AQMD's Compliance Assistance Hotline at
916 874-4884 or e-mail Teresa Posey at tposey@airquality.org.
The SMAQMD cannot accept permit applications via the Internet.
Submit the following, either by mail or in person to SMAQMD, 777 12th
Street, 3rd Floor, Sacramento, CA 95814:
- a completed permit application form(s)
- detailed description of your equipment (included in the form(s))
- detailed information on materials (included in the form(s))
- the appropriate permit fee
Each equipment unit requires a separate application for a Permit to Operate.
A permit fee will be assessed for each new or modified source based on the type and size of the source. Fees are listed in the instructions for each equipment type. Every applicant for a Permit to Operate shall pay one half the estimated initial permit fee upon filing of the application, and the remainder upon issuance of the permit.
If you operate equipment without a Permit to Operate, you are subject to legal action, including civil or criminal penalties up to $50,000 per day of operation or up to six months in jail. For additional information on violations of air quality laws, see our compliance section.
